Getting fruit delivered in Sydney solves the first problem: good fruit, in your kitchen, without the supermarket trip. The second problem is yours. A few kilos just arrived, and you want to eat all of it before any of it turns. Ten minutes of sorting when the box lands makes the difference.
Sort it the day it arrives
Your order is packed the same day it is delivered, so it reaches you with plenty of life left. Keep it that way:
- Unpack straight away. Fruit left stacked in a box bruises and warms up.
- Check ripeness. Split each item into “eat now” and “eat later”.
- Do not wash yet. Water speeds up mould, especially on berries. Wash just before eating.
Bench or fridge?
On the bench
- Bananas. Keep them out of the fridge and away from other fruit. They give off ethylene, a natural gas that ripens whatever sits beside them.
- Avocados. Leave them out until they give slightly when pressed, then move them to the fridge to hold for a few more days.
- Kiwi fruit and passion fruit. Ripen on the bench. A wrinkled passion fruit is a ripe one.
In the fridge
- Strawberries and blueberries. Keep them dry, in their punnets, in the fridge. Eat these first.
- Apples. Pink Lady and Granny Smith apples keep for weeks in the crisper, far longer than in a fruit bowl.
- Cherries and lychees. Refrigerate them unwashed and they stay firm.
A quick trick: need an avocado ready sooner? Put it in a paper bag with a banana overnight.
When you have more than you can eat
Most loose fruit has a 4kg minimum, which is a lot of bananas if you live alone. Nothing needs to be wasted:
- Freeze it. Peel and slice ripe bananas, hull strawberries, and freeze them flat on a tray before bagging. They go straight into smoothies.
- Cook it. Soft apples stew down in fifteen minutes. Overripe bananas make the best banana bread.
- Share it. Split your order with a neighbour, or take the extra to work.
If you are not sure how much to order in the first place, read kilo or box: what to order.
Order the fruit you will actually eat
There is no subscription, so nothing arrives that you did not ask for. You choose each item, and if you like your bananas green or your avocados firm, leave a note with your order. Questions about delivery days or minimums are answered on the FAQ page.
Choose your fruit before 3pm and it is at your door tomorrow.
